The increase in technology in the last decade has been something to marvel at. You watched the Jetson’s on your 20-inch TV thinking that this was so far-fetched that it was actually funny. Flying cars and robot nannies, it was comical to think about it actually being a reality at some point in the future.

It’s not that funny anymore. These things are actually becoming reality. Daily, we live and work with robots. Self-driving cars are being driven on roads all over the world, and flying cars are actually in the works. It’s a crazy, technology-driven world that we now live in and it’s time that we get accustomed to this change. Dr. Michio Kaku, an author, theoretical physicist, and futurist, stated in one of his books: "Today, your cell phone has more computer power than all of NASA back in 1969, when it placed two astronauts on the moon."

2017 has been an amazing year for technology so far. We are going to take a look at the technology that has dominated this year and what we can expect going into the future.

IoT

The Internet of Things revolution has been brewing for quite some time. You have probably heard that term over and over. Chances are, you’ve used this technology at some point in recent years. It actually has many very practical uses. When I am driving, my Apple Watch will alert me to a phone call and I can answer the call on my watch. I don’t have to worry about the distraction of contorting my body in an attempt to remove the phone from my pocket because my phone is on my wrist. The reason that this technology will be around for years to come… it is super practical and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to use it.

Machine Learning

This technology has hit the scene without making any major noise, although it has taken some major steps in the last couple of years. You use machine learning every day without even realizing it. Those recommended products that Amazon gives you after you make a purchase; that is created by machine learning. When Spotify mentions new songs that you should listen to based on the music that you like; that is created by machine learning. This technology has made a seamless entrance into the market. So seamless that you didn’t even have time to realize that you use it everyday.

There is no reason to expect this technology to disappear anytime soon. The rapid advancements in machine learning give you the idea that it will be around for quite some time.

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

We’ve seen AR and VR burst onto the scene over the past couple of years. In one of our recent blogs, we discussed the benefits of AR in healthcare. It is actually helping medical students get the training and experience that they need in a way that they have never been able to before. This video shows all of the amazing features that AR brings to the table. Not only is this technology really cool, it actually helps save lives.

As far as virtual reality goes, every kid (and their parents) were fascinated with this technology. I think it’s safe to say that almost every child in the world had those VR headseats on their Christmas wish list. It really is cool to be able to watch a video and feel like you are there. However, the rave over this new technology has seemed to die down as of late and it’s hard to tell if it will ever reach that level of popularity again. But, most tech people believe that VR is just getting started… so we will see.

Automation

Automation has made a more methodical entrance into the world of technology as of late. We expect that it will continue to grow over the next 10 years into something very special and powerful. We already have robot journalists that keep your schedule in order and update it anytime you need it to. According to The Guardian, there is a good chance that we could see a robot publish writing that is worthy of a Pulitzer Prize. When you can combine automation with machine learning, you can begin to do things unimaginable. The future looks bright for automation.

We talked about this in the introduction, but self-driving cars are beginning to burst on the scene of the car industry. Almost every car manufacturer known to man is in the developmental stage, or has already developed an autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle. This technology is absolutely crazy. Even five years ago, it was hard to comprehend a self-driving car. It was difficult to imagine looking over a lane and seeing someone who was paying absolutely no attention to the roadway (don’t do that) but not crashing. We shouldn't be surprised. Technology doesn’t wait for our minds to comprehend. It’s always moving forward.

These are just some of the technologies that have taken center stage this year. There are obviously many more that deserve mention. These technologies continue to develop which makes our lives more efficient and enriching. Assuming the constant enhancements of these technologies, they will be around for years to come, helping us to live a more enjoyable life. Who knows, we might be driving around flying cars in the next 20 years.
